How to do a great employee induction

When you hire a new employee, one of the hardest parts for both you and them is the induction stage. As they learn the ins and outs of their responsibilities of their new role, they will also need to learn about their team and the company culture.

It can be an exciting time, especially when the employee induction offers all the information and support a new employee needs when they join the company.

Here are the key steps to follow to provide an excellent employee induction:

Meet the team

On day one, introduce the new employee to the team. Try to keep it informal so it doesn’t feel too intimidating, and give everyone a chance to introduce themselves.

Be sure to point out the key figures on the team – those who the employee will report to and those who are best to go to for help, for example.

It can also be a good idea to assign a buddy to the new employee, so they have someone to chat to and ask informal questions.

Admin

The next important step is to run through all of the admin tasks. This includes:

  • Their contract (if not finalised already)
  • Tax forms
  • Banking information
  • Superannuation (KiwiSaver) forms
  • Emergency contact details
  • Evacuation procedures
  • Emergency procedures
  • Work and Safety information
  • Any essential medical information you need to know about if they have an emergency

Position and company information

Next, ensure the new team member has all of the information they need as an employee. It can be easiest to print this information out so they can read it during their induction, but have it on hand should they ever need to refer back to it.

This should include:

  • Responsibilities
  • Staff scheduling (including breaks, holiday entitlement, sick leave etc)
  • Employee code of conduct
  • Company history
  • Company structure and departments
  • Information about human resources at your company
  • Any staff benefits
  • Disciplinary processes

Employee training

With the basics of their job and the company covered, it’s time to begin training. While most employees are hired with at least some skill or knowledge in their area, there will be additional training required to get them up to speed on how things are done at your company.

This can include training for your specific systems, as well as upskilling and expanding on the existing knowledge and abilities of your new staff member.

You can offer this employee training in-house from senior staff members, or you can outsource it to a company such as Study From Work. We offer NZQA-accredited micro-credentials that provide training in a number of key business areas, including communications, financial planning, and management.

Training helps to ensure your staff members are as productive and valuable as possible, and helps to make for loyal employees as they recognise the added opportunities they can gain by working with you.
