4 reasons to invest in learning & development

Running any business or organisation is hard work, and the day-to-day tasks and challenges can feel all-consuming.

It’s easy for any manager to spend their time just making it through each week, so creating learning and development opportunities for their teams is not often high on the priority list.

However, investing in L&D is increasingly important in any modern workplace, and managers need to make time for setting these systems in place.

Here are four reasons why creating L&D programmes in your workplace are worth the extra effort.

Increased retention

One of the hardest things busy managers have to deal with is employee turnover. The process of advertising for a role, reading CVs, hosting interviews, hiring, then training up a new staff member is time consuming and expensive.

To avoid employee turnover, spending a little time on increased retention can help to save a lot of time on replacing skilled team members.

Learning and development programmes in the workplace can help to improve retention as employees enjoy taking on new skills and responsibilities. It shows that you care about an employee’s career, and that you are willing to put the time and money into helping them grow, giving them more reasons to stay with the company.

2. Attract better talent

In a heated job market, it can be tough to find top talent. Employers are increasingly competing to provide competitive remuneration packages, with everything from flexible work arrangements to increased salaries on the table.

By adding learning and development programmes to your offering, you’re giving new talent a great reason to select your business over a competitor’s.

3. Quickly upskill new hires

Any time someone joins the team, there will always be a period of upskilling as they learn about the job and the company. It takes a lot of time until they are fully able to complete their tasks without support, which can be a drain on resources.

By providing learning and development programmes, you may be able to upskill your new hires more quickly. It can be a fast track to them being a fully capable team member who no longer requires support or advice from management to do their work.

4. Prepare future management potential

Finally, L&D programmes can help you to prepare future managers amongst your teams. It’s often easy to see potential amongst new hires or existing team members, but hard to know how to prepare them to one day move into a position that requires new skills or knowledge.

With practical training and upskilling, you can slowly prepare them for more senior roles. This can be a great way to weather the loss of a manager or senior team member, as you have already put the work in to prepare someone new for that role. This can save you the stress and hassle of scrambling to either hire someone new or quickly upskill someone from the team at the last minute.
